One of my goals for 2016 is to try to add some more variety to my content. While I want my blog to be primarily my personal style, I thought it would be nice to add some new stuff too! So I thought it would be fun to compile a short list-Au Courant or In the Current- of some things I have been loving lately and maybe it could inspire you to love it too!

First of all ? Claire Marshall is #goals. Gorgeous. Anyway, I am always looking for the perfect beach waves to match my always-sunny, always-summer, LA-cool-girl life I always dream about. Happy I stumbled upon this video because the process is quick and easy with seamless results!

I got this palette at the beginning of the summer so I could try a smoky eye. I kind of fiddled around with the different shades before I turned over the palette to the back sometime in the middle of the semester. FACEPALM. Not only did I realized that I was an unobservant idiot but I also realized that it comes with 13 different eye shadow combinations. The pairings range from a quick swipe of two colors to going all out with four colors! This palette is perfect for all occasions plus it is really inexpensive!

Back in the day, I totally thought that¬†septum piercings¬†were super trashy and made you look like a bull. But over the past few years, I have grown to love them. Honestly, I think some people can pull it off and it can really add to their look. IDK if I’m one of those people but I decided to give the look a go. But I’m lazy AF and don’t want to spend the money or time or¬†pain of actually getting it done plus I’m pretty sure my mom would disown me. So I got fake ones instead! Personally? I love it but you guys will have to let me know.

The car-filled with my best friend and myself plus her two younger siblings- pulled up to the side of the quaint main street of Cazenovia. We were taking a quick detour to meet my best friend’s mom for dinner before driving¬†to¬†Syracuse University for the night.¬†The street was lined with yummy restaurants, cozy cafes, and little boutiques. Every shop was lit as the sun had set¬†a couple of hours ago on Upstate NY.¬†The little street was so beautiful that it seemed like it was straight out of the fictional town of Rosewood¬†from Pretty Little Liars.

With my coat in hand, I swung open the car door and¬†it smacked right into a pile of snow. As the passenger, I was too busy directing my friend to our destination to notice the snow accumulation. And having spent the past month an hour south where there was only a dust of frost,¬†seeing snow was quite the surprise. Realizing that my coat in my arm wasn’t enough to protect me for the winter cold, I quickly grabbed my hat, scarf, and gloves as well.

Winter had finally arrived. And I was sure bummed out. Being the biggest fan of this year’s El Nino, I was hoping that snow and cold and winter itself was going to skip out on us this year. But navigating through potentially icy sidewalks and wrapping my scarf around my face to protect me from the biting air made me realize that winter was just late, not absent.

My friend’s mom was running late so we took refuge from the cold¬†in the coziest little teahouse. A fireplace welcomed us into a warm and inviting atmosphere. The owner of the store gave us peppermint tea to sip on as we waited for her. It’s funny. Winter probably ranks on my list of things I like the least. But without winter, cozy tea and warm fireplaces wouldn’t be the same. While snow and cold suck, it’s nice to be cozy for the winter.

My warm winter has finally come to an end. Thankfully, I am prepared as I have bought the coziest knit hat and scarf from Forever 21. The oatmeal color of them make it perfect for every outfit and coat. And they sure keep me warm and cozy for the winter! :)

Of course the day I want to take pictures for my blog is the day winter decides to start acting like winter.

It’s 4:30 in the afternoon and I am shivering in a black dress layered with a jacket, tights, socks, and booties. It isn’t snowing or windy at the moment but the temperature has certainly dropped from the El-Nino temps I have gotten used to. My hands cannot stop shaking and they desperately pull the jacket sleeves over¬†them for protection from the frigid air.

Any sane person would have ditched the idea and retreated back into the warmths of their home. But are fashion bloggers sane people? No. Us fashion bloggers brace the snow and cold for the perfect picture-in freaking gowns, no less! Besides, I had already risen from my slumbers today and put on makeup. Putting on makeup during winter break is an exhausting task. Hell, getting out of bed is hard enough. At this point, there was no way I was going back until I got my pictures.

Except, my camera won’t let me. Subject is too dark it keeps telling me as I furiously increase and decrease the aperture and shutter speed. Subject is too dark. Ugh. It’s only 4:30. Even though it’s January, it should not be getting this dark so soon. Like I just woke up a few hours ago and the sun is already gone. I am so moving to Los Angeles after school where¬†it’s sunny all the time.

It is basically a lost cause at this point but like I said, there’s not turning back. So I shuffle [shiver]¬†away from my camera and pose for a few pictures. Cliiiiiiiicccckkkkkkkkkkkk goes my camera at a ridiculously slow shutter speed. Even if the light turns out okay, I’m going to be all blurry. I shuffle [shiver] back to my camera expecting the worst.

Except no. It was worse than the worst. My camera died.

After I plug in my camera battery to be charged, I notice a miracle. The guest bedroom light is on. And surprisingly, the room is clean and clutter-free! I’m going to take my pictures here. While my camera charges for a little bit, I collect some props to help achieve a nice and cozy aesthetic:¬†an oversized cardigan, my glasses, and Jane Eyre. The cat is an added bonus¬†for cuddles and company.

When my camera is about 15% charged, I plump my cat down on the guest bed and start clicking away. He acts all cute and cuddly until he doesn’t anymore. Maybe he¬†thought he was just being used as a prop or something¬†(which is like 60ish% false…..)¬†?¬†But soon he starts clawing at my dress¬†and tights and finally, dismisses himself from the room with an angry meow. Thankfully, I have Jane Eyre to fall back on.

As one can see from reading my blog, I usually do not take indoor pictures. But, I am pretty happy with the end result of them (nicely lit + not blurry which would not have happened if I took them outside).

2015 started with me shoving ten grapes -shish kabob-ed on a stick- into my mouth as fast as possible. (Apparently it is a Spanish tradition and it brings you good luck into the new year?) With chipmunk cheeks filled with grapes and juice dribbling down my chin, I then proceeded to kiss my boyfriend at midnight+30 seconds. It was a relaxed night filled with family, friends, and endless games of Salad bowl (Charades, Taboo, and One Word Clue into one game-super fun, recommend). Definitely a great way to ring in the new year.

It’s funny how much has changed in just one year. If someone were to tell one-year-ago Olivia that she would transfer schools to pursue fashion design, she probably would have looked at you funny. And if you were to tell her that within the next year, she would have sewn a pair of jeans, she probably would have laughed in your face. And if you were to have told her that she would end up retiring the blue and white colors of the Hartwick Hawks to become an Orange (Wo)Man at Syracuse University, she probably would have¬†told you to GTFO¬†and run away in disgust.

So yeah, it’s funny and crazy how different it was one year ago. One year ago,¬†I was excited to¬†return back to my freshman year at Hartwick College. I would have still had a thing against Syracuse University because I hated the color combination of orange and blue. (I’m not even kidding you on this one.)¬†My sewing skills would still be limited to the *incorrect* techniques I taught myself how to do. And it would be months before I would have met my fellow Orange fam. To sum it all up, I was just in a completely different place than I am today. And I couldn’t be more happier!

It usually starts with a boredom rather than a desire. A beautiful remedy to ease the eyes away from an endless essay. Oh, I’ll just take a quick break away from my homework, you say as you type Forever 21 into Google’s address bar. A sense of thrill creeps into your hands as you click on the blue link. Bright colors of various new clothing replace the once monotonous Times New Roman-word-filled screen. As you start clicking through the New Arrivals, thoughts of your homework soon drift away….

 

Suddenly, you’re jerked away from your trance. Maybe it was the sudden darkness in your bedroom or the sounds of your roommate getting ready for bed. But as your eyes adjust, you realize the mess that has¬†almost occurred. In front of you is a shopping bag full of clothes and accessories, a neglected essay, and a clock revealing a whole hour wasted. Your hand contains a credit card ready to spend.

In a sickened panic, you toss the card to your side and begin to curse yourself and online shopping. Minimizing your website tab, you pull up your essay in a frenzy. Damn distractions, you think as you type furiously. Pushing past ideas of how you would be more useful as a personal shopper than a college student, you work into the night.

You finally type that last word with a sigh of relief. Bedtime has long passed and your mind is beyond exhausted. After saving the essay, you begin closing out of all tabs and windows on your computer. You click on the Forever 21 tab to close it out but your shopping cart from earlier dances in front of your eyes. The angel on your shoulder tells you no but there is something so enticing about clothes. You earned it after writing that essay, you say to yourself and grab that disregarded credit card next to you.

Sure, you might have just written a hurried essay but at least you have some clothes arriving in 3-5 business days :)

Oh Online Shipping.

It is such a beauty and a curse at the same time. I usually don’t have the problem of impulsively buying new clothes online although I will admit that it proves to be quite the time procrastinator. But one of the biggest problems for me is making sure the clothes that I buy online will fit. Since you can’t try clothes online (although they should definitely find technology to solve this problem), it’s a luck of the draw. Unfortunately, I’m not the luckiest person and the clothes end up being too big, even when I get the smallest size. (Darn you small body!) This romper is a perfect example. I got the smallest size from Forever 21 and when I finally tried it on, the strapless romper fell to my waist. Disappointed, I put it aside in my closet for two years and would bring it out to wistfully look at it. (Maybe in hopes that my boobs would miraculously grow or something?) Then last summer, I determinedly decided I was going to wear it and took a seam ripper to it. After much sizing, pinning (myself), and sewing, I was able to tailor the romper! Now I wear it all. the. time. Even in the middle of winter like shown here. :)
